Choosing a domain name

A domain name should, ideally, be short, memorable, easy to spell and easy to describe to your customers whilst, at the same time, being recognisable as your business.

You've probably heard of confused.com and you'll know that they deal with insurance. However, if you didn't know that then you'd probably wonder what confused.com was.

If confused.com had chosen the domain name insurance.com then you'd know exactly what type of business they were.

For the purpose of search engine listing, insurance.com is a much better domain name because it includes a keyword that people will use to find that particular type of business. However, confused.com is short, catchy and memorable.

When choosing your domain name try to strike a balance between something that's recognisable as your business, describes what you do and is easy to remember.

Remember though, you can register as many domain names as you like and they can all direct ('point') to the same place. This is called 'web forwarding'.

Check availability

Once you've decided on your preferred domain name/s you'll need to check their availability. This can be done easily online at various websites, see below, or contact us and we can quickly check availability for you.

Web forwarding

Most domain names will directly host a website however if you have more than one domain name then you may want to direct them all to one, or more, websites. Redirecting a domain name is called 'web forwarding'.

For example, you could register www.yourbusiness.co.uk and set up web forwarding so that when people type in that address they are redirected to www.yourbusiness.com.
